WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A look at some of the top stories for Friday, May 17, 2024:

Spirit layoffs – Hundreds of workers in Wichita will soon be without a job. Spirit AeroSystems confirmed plans to lay off 400-450 workers as the company deals with a slowdown in production.

Gaza aid – The U.S. Military said humanitarian aid trucks have move into Gaza off a newly built pier near the territory’s coast. Ships in the Mediterranean are on standby with about 500 tons of aid for people displaced by the war between Israel and Hamas.

Marijuana reclassification – The Department of Justice formally started the process to reclassify marijuana a less dangerous substance. The agency submitted a notice on Thursday to reschedule marijuana from a “Schedule One” drug to “Schedule Three.” Now, agencies have 60 days to weigh in on the change before it becomes official.
