T’puram: Thampanoor police on Monday arrested a 35-year-old West Bengal native for possession of a large quantity of cannabis. The accused, identified as Ratan Namdas, was taken into custody near Thampanoor bus stand following a tip-off, with assistance from the city’s Dansaf, a rapid response team deployed for crime prevention.Police officials, acting on suspicion, conducted a search of his belongings and discovered 7.245kg of cannabis.The contraband was packed in two separate packets, wrapped in brown masking tape and concealed in his bag. Namdas reportedly told police that he arrived at Thampanoor by bus but did not provide further details regarding the source or destination of the drugs. Investigators are now working to determine whether he was acting as a middleman or operating as a small-scale dealer.According to police, further questioning is underway to uncover the broader network, if any, behind the smuggling attempt. “We are probing whether he has any local contacts or if he was part of a larger supply chain,” an officer said.
