PITTSFIELD — Two Herberg Middle School students received “medical care” Friday after eating cannabis edibles at school, the Pittsfield Public Schools said.
Principal William Wood said in a message to the school community Thursday that the edibles were given to students by one of their peers.
“The school administration and school nurse acted immediately to ensure the health and safety of all students involved,” he wrote.
The student who brought the edibles in was disciplined and police were notified to investigate, he said. It’s unclear if the student will face legal consequences; juvenile court records are not public.
Wood called it an “isolated incident” that shows how families should have conversations about making good decisions. According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cannabis-involved emergency department visits increased for youth 14 and under as cannabis legalization expanded across the United States.
Wood said guardians should tell children not to accept food, candy or drinks from other students.
“Even when offered with good intentions, there is no way to know what an item may contain or how it may affect someone,” he wrote.
Parents and guardians were told to contact the school if they have more questions.
