MOORHEAD, MINN (Valley News Live) – The first recreational marijuana shop not on tribal land in Minnesota, is now open in Moorhead.
“It’s a historical moment for the state of Minnesota to be able to be the first adult use dispensary open. But it’s the very first one from a tribal standpoint too,” said Zach Wilson, CEO of Waabigwan Mashkiki.
The White Earth Band of Chippewa became the first tribal nation in Minnesota to open recreational marijuana dispensaries outside of its reservation, under a deal signed by Governor Tim Walz.
The agreement allows White Earth to open up to eight retail cannabis dispensaries across the state.
“I mean we’re excited it’s bringing jobs. You know from the economic standpoint for the community here as well as the community for White Earth, so it’s been very exciting for this to come to fruition,” said Wilson.
Wilson says they decided to open a location in Moorhead because of accessibility.
“Where’s the largest market closest to us to be able to get products to consumers, and it made sense here,” said Wilson. “All eyes are on us right now, you know, being the only ones that are open and doing this. So, you know, there’s a little more heightened responsibility to educate and making sure that we’ve got products that consumers want.”
According to Wilson, they are planning to open other locations throughout Minnesota.
