A pensioner who was caught delivering £144,000 worth of cannabis agreed with a judge that he was getting too old for such crime before he was jailed for 28 months.

Jerome Vadon, 67, was stopped by police as he drove towards Aberdeen from London in a Volvo with a load of the Class B drug.

Officers who approached him noticed a strong smell of cannabis and 25 kilos of the drug were recovered following a search of the vehicle, the High Court in Edinburgh heard.

The court was told that police were acting on information received when they signalled Vadon to pull over in the car on the A90 at Temple of Fiddes, at Fordoun, in Aberdeenshire on May 3 this year.

Three cardboard boxes containing drugs were in the rear seat and a further two were in the boot with a total of 24 vacuum packed packages seized.

Vadon admitted transporting the cannabis north from London for a fee of pounds 1000 and more than pounds 900 in cash was found on him.

Defence counsel Neil Shand said Vadon had become homeless following the breakdown of a relationship with a woman and was sofa surfing at the time.

He said Vadon was needing money to pay for accommodation and for dental work but acknowledged that what he did was stupid.

The defence counsel said there was no proceeds of crime action to seize illegal profits and that when he raised it with Vadon he simply laughed and said: “I have nothing.”

Vadon, a prisoner in HMP Grampian, admitted being concerned in the supply of the drug when he appeared at the court via a video link to jail before judge Lord Renucci.

The judge said to him: “You are a bit old for this are you not?”. Vadon said: “I am indeed.” He confirmed that he was an OAP.

Lord Renucci said: “You are no stranger to the court, nor to the prison system, having previously been sentenced to eight years, one year and nine years.”

Vadon’s latter offence which earned him a jail term was also for drugs and involved being concerned in the supply of ecstasy.

Lord Renucci told him: “I am not going to lecture you Mr Vadon. You are now a man of some maturity. at 67 years of age. You will realise your actions have consequences for you. “

The judge said that he would have faced a 42-month sentence for the cannabis supply crime but it would be reduced following his early guilty plea.
