SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The push to regulate intoxicating hemp products seems to be on ice as lawmakers wrap up the spring session.
The Illinois Healthy Alternatives Association says regulatory reform is critical to keep hemp products out of the hands of children. Advocates told WAND News that Illinois needs to ban people under 21 from buying hemp derived products, except for non-active-duty veterans 18 and older. They also agree with Gov. JB Pritzker that Illinois should require better product testing and accurate labeling.
“It’s very important to us that any regulation put forth is going to protect all of the various business types across the hemp sector and allow these businesses to continue to thrive and grow as well as protecting the consumers,” said ILHAA President Justin Ward. “That’s the other really big piece of this.”
The Cannabis Business Association of Illinois told WAND News Illinois is one of just a handful of states that has failed to take action on hemp. The group said hemp and cannabis come from the same plant, and both products can get users high.
“Individual municipalities across the state are putting in place their own rules, creating a confusing patchwork of regulations,” said CBAI Executive Director Tiffany Chappell Ingram. “It’s time lawmakers regulate intoxicating hemp in a manner similar to cannabis.”
