MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The Alabama Legislature passed two bill Tuesday to regulate vapes and other THC products.

One of the bills, sponsored by Rep. Andy Whitt, would authorize the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to regulate all consumable hemp products, removing them from convenient stores and limiting how much can be bought.

“When your able to buy 50 milligrams in Shelby County on Interstate 65 and a slushy machine, we’ve got a true problem.” Rep. Whitt said. “So I said get your slushy on the way to the beaches. No more.”

The bill now heads to the governor for her signature.

A second bill targeting vapes is also on its way to the governor’s desk.

Representative Barbara Drummond’s bill would only allow convenient stores to sell FDA approved products. All other products would have to be sold and bought and 21-and-up stores.

“From the classrooms to in, in the community, we saw this becoming an epidemic,” Drummond said.

Drummond said the reason she has pressed this issue for so long is because of a young man who died last year in Dallas County after smoking a vape pen laced with Fentanyl.

She also recalled a third grader who was vaping.

“This is a problem that is going to affect their their health. And I think what this body did from the Senate to the House, our children, we are looking out for their future,” she added.
