Three people have been charged in two separate investigations, after the Lethbridge Police Service and ALERT Calgary seized a variety of illegal drugs and multiple handguns.

ALERT Calgary’s organized crime team seized three handguns and an estimated $320,000 worth of illegal drugs as part of a drug trafficking investigation that began in April.

The Calgary Police Service assisted ALERT with the execution of a search warrant and an arrest at an apartment in Calgary’s southeast Seton neighbourhood on May 22.

Officers seized three loaded handguns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, 2,002 grams of cocaine, 2,008 grams of methamphetamine and $51,000 cash.

“The combination of drugs and handguns yield a considerable threat to community safety. We continue to work with our partners to target dangerous offenders,” said Staff Sgt. Hayley Marquis with ALERT Calgary.

The firearms will be submitted to ALERT’s Provincial Firearms Lab for further ballistics testing and analysis, the agency said in a news release. Two of the handguns were previously reported stolen from Redcliff and Pincher Creek in southern Alberta.

Kay-Jay Swann is charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime and multiple firearms-related offences. Swan has a lifetime firearms prohibition due to a previous conviction for drug-related offences.

Lethbridge Bust

Earlier this year, members of Lethbridge police’s crime suppression team and property crimes unit began an investigation into drug trafficking in the city. As a result of the investigation, officers executed a search warrant on May 28 at a home along the 600 block of 10th Street N.

Officers arrested one man and seized approximately 3.6 kilograms of cocaine, more than 1,600 MDMA (ecstasy) tablets, 46 grams of ketamine, 425 grams of psilocybin, 16,000 black stock cigarettes, six kilograms of cannabis, 500 cartridges of cannabis extract and $16,000 cash.

Additional drugs and paraphernalia, including a small quantity of methamphetamine and other cannabis and tobacco products, were also seized from the home.

The seizure totalled nearly $500,000 worth of drugs.

The investigation also revealed the driver of a vehicle engaged in activity consistent with drug trafficking. Police conducted a targeted traffic stop along the 1100 block of 19th Street S. and the female driver was arrested.
