NILES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WNDU) – Nine applications have been received for licenses to sell marijuana in Niles Township, just north of the Indiana State Line.

Seven of the nine were received on May 2, the day the township began accepting applications.

In most cases, marijuana businesses are looking to displace more established businesses on the block. The township today shared the chosen addresses of pot shop sites and their current uses.

Murdock’s Motors is the parcel closest to the state line. It is being eyed by JARS Cannabis.

Jay’s Lounge and Michiana Rental are also properties poised to be replaced by cannabis businesses.

While Michiana Rental will be moving, it won’t be moving far. Owner Daniel Tiser has another building off 11th Street, just north of his current location.

“I’m fortunate. Very fortunate that I have another location already, and it’s literally right next door, all on the same roads. Good move for me. It’s going to be easier out of all of them,” Tiser says. “I talked to a couple people that have been contacted that they have to move too, and they can’t even find  properties to buy, that they’re looking to buy. Even If they’re not on this road, they’re looking at other areas and they’re having a hard time finding properties to buy.”

When Niles Township resident Marianne Burrow was asked what she thought of the number of nine applications, she replied: “That’s a lot more than I thought. I was hoping for less. These places are popping up like little Dollar Generals.”
