Alabama residents are just days away from the ban of smokable hemp products across the state.
After a vote by the state legislature, on July 1st it will be illegal to sell or possess these products.
Friday night, a hemp event was held in Birmingham’s Elysian Garden– hosted by Alabama Wellness Collective.
It’s an effort to raise funds to legally fight the ban of these products– as they consider seeking an injunction to stop enforcement of it.
One smoke shop owner says the ban will not only impact the economy but could possibly push people to break the law.
Noah Water, expansion manager of Gallery Smoke Brand, recalls a conversation with one customer.
“He was like if this happens, I’m going to have to go back to the street So that’s a creation of the black market. People were leaving the streets and coming to us because that’s the thing that they prefer is they want consistent testing they want something that they know they can trust and now that that’s being taken away people are going back to the streets.”
Dozens of industry retailers, processors, and growers attended the Birmingham event– as well as supporters of their cause.
