A Burlington man was arrested Monday following a shots-fired investigation after police say he admitted to firing a stolen gun and was found to have marijuana on him after being taken to jail.

Trayveon Jefferson, 20, was arrested by the Burlington Police Department and charged with reckless use of a firearm (simple misdemeanor), being a person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons (serious misdemeanor), fourth-degree theft (serious misdemeanor), possession of contraband in a correctional institution (class D felony).

Jefferson also had two other warrants for possession of controlled substances out of Henry and Wapello counties at the time of his arrest, according to a press release from the Burlington Police Department.

At around 10:12 p.m. Monday, Burlington police were called to the 400 block of S. Woodlawn Avenue after receiving reports of shots being fired.

When officers arrived, they found one spent 9mm casing, two .380 casings, and two .40 caliber casings, according to a criminal complaint.

Detectives executed a search warrant of a home at 410 S. Woodlawn Ave. where Jefferson was located inside the basement.

Police learned Jefferson had active warrants and as they were searching him during his arrest, Jefferson told officers he had a gun him his pocket, the complaint states.

After a check on the gun’s serial number, officers learned the gun had been reported stolen during a car burglary and was valued at $339.99, according to the complaint.

Jefferson told police he had purchased the handgun for $100 and admitted to firing off two rounds as “warning shots” near the front porch, the complaint states.

Police also located other firearms inside the residence during their search, the release states.

Officers patted Jefferson down and asked if he had anything illegal in his possession, but Jefferson denied having any such items, according to the complaint.

After Jefferson was transported to the Des Moines County Jail, a THC cartridge was found in his possession, the complaint states.

Court records show Jefferson has three prior misdemeanor marijuana convictions in Lee County and the City of Ottumwa, making him ineligible to possess any firearms.

Jefferson is being held at the Des Moines County Jail on $16,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. June 20 at the Des Moines County Courthouse.
