The third in our series of guest episodes features a discussion between the CEO of Releaf, Tim Kirby, and Robert Jappie, a partner at Fieldfisher LLP specialising in regulatory law.
In this episode, Tim & Robert explore the persistent barriers to medical cannabis access in the UK despite its legalisation in 2018. They discuss how fragmented oversight, lack of clear guidance, and an imbalanced public-private system have hindered meaningful progress, leaving clinics and patients in a state of uncertainty.
With only a small fraction of patients receiving legal prescriptions, while an estimated 1.2 million continue to self-medicate with cannabis obtained from illicit sources, the conversation also delves into the roles of affordability, stigma, limited education, and distrust in the system. The urgent need for coherent policy reform is clear, and improved visibility of the legal pathway is needed to better serve patient needs.
