A 10-year-old child is hospitalized in critical condition with a serious head injury sustained in a traffic crash in Waterford on Wednesday evening that also injured four others — and police believe the driver who caused the collision may have been under the influence of marijuana at the time.

The crash happened at around 6 p.m. when a Ford Escape traveling south on Cass Lake Road was struck by a Jaguar as the Jaguar was turning from northbound Cass Lake Road at Highland Road, officials said.

According to the Waterford Police Department, the driver of the Jaguar, a 17-year-old Waterford resident, disregarded a red light while making the turn. Evidence of marijuana was found on the floorboard of the Jaguar and is suspected as a factor in the crash, police said.

Police said the 10-year-old child had been a rear seat passenger in the Escape and was transported to DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital. A 14-year-old sitting next to the 10-year-old sustained minor injuries, was treated at a hospital and released.

The Escape’s 19-year-old driver, a 22-year-old front seat passenger, and the Jaguar’s driver sustained moderate injuries and were admitted to a local hospital, police said.

A search warrant was obtained for analysis of the Jaguar driver’s blood, police said.
