Are you a fan of Haribo gummy candies? This brand is known for their gummies in the shapes of snakes, rings and many more, but the most popular ones are the gummy bears. However, the Netherlands has started a health alert because cannabis, commonly known as marihuana, was found in their bags. Because of this the Haribo company was asked for a product withdrawal, so that people consuming this wouldn’t be affected by this substance.

It is rare to find marihuana inside gummy candy bags, and mostly if they come from big companies like Haribo. However, it is not the only company dealing with strange things found on their products. I know you are curious to know how this marihuana got into these bags, so let’s get started!

Haribo company

This is one of the most popular gummy candy brands in the world, founded in 1920 by Hans Riegel in Bonn city. Fun Fact about Haribo’s name is that it comes from the previously mentioned proper names: HAns, RIegel and BOnn. What a strange and witty way to come up with a company name, right?

Their gummy products are loved everywhere because they have a wide range of shapes and flavors. Who hasn’t tried their worldwide known gummy bears? So tasty!

Gummy candies and marihuana

The Netherlands noticed some marihuana residues on Haribo gummy candies. Of course, people who bought them didn’t know the gummies contained marihuana, which is very dangerous for our health. You can’t consume marihuana as if it were a regular candy, even more so if you don’t know you are consuming it.

Some people started to feel unwell, they had symptoms like dizziness, confusion and a sense of scare because they didn’t know what was happening.  Imagine how much marihuana a child had consumed!

Gummies removed from the market

It is true not all gummies were affected, but Haribo had to remove specific ones from the market, the Happy Cola Fizz. Fortunately, it wasn’t a worldwide problem since Haribo only sold these gummies to the Netherlands.

The Happy Cola Fizz gummies have a cola drink bottle shaped with a sour flavor, whose packaging weighed 1 pound and its due date was in 2026.

Government of the Netherlands’ take on this issue

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) was the one warning society about the health issue concerning Haribo gummies.

This institution notified people to stop eating them and stores to stop selling them. What’s more, they want this incident to be investigated and action taken against the guilty people.

What about Haribo?

They didn’t want any trouble and they acted very quickly. They withdrew all the Happy Cola Fizz bags in the Netherlands and they cooperated with the police to solve the marihuana issue.

In order to keep with their good reputation, Haribo is making sure their consumers know they are taking this situation very seriously.

But, how is it possible marihuana got into those gummy bags?

That’s what everybody, and mostly the ones affected, are curious about. It is not clear the reason behind this, but there are some theories that are being investigated.

Most theories are about sabotage or an error from the fabric. Also, could have been a transporting or storage problem.

This case is an example of how important it is that companies check their products and follow quality controls. Haribo acted in the right way, but we, as consumers, should also be careful and be informed of what we eat on a regular basis.

Does this mean we have to stop consuming Haribo products? Not at all, incidents happen all the time and everybody will learn something from this case. So, don’t worry, keep enjoying your Haribos!
