MERLIN, Ore. — Rural Metro firefighters responded to a fire in an industrial building on Merlin Avenue on May 5, discovering the building was an illegal marijuana growing site.

The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office said more than 1,300 marijuana plants were seized and destroyed after the fire was put out. State Fire Marshals determined the fire was caused by tampering with the electrical system to power the grow operation illegally.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Josephine Marijuana Enforcement Team tip line at (541) 474-5252.
