MACON-BIBB, Ga. (WGXA) — A medical cannabis bill has been burned year after year by Georgia lawmakers.

It was legalized 10 years ago however, those in support of it say it is still an uphill battle. Which is why Judson Hill, market president of Georgia Fine Fettle, says they brought lawmakers, doctors, and patients to tour their facility to see how medical cannabis is produced.

“We just wanted to help start the conversation to educate legislators, allow doctors to share their medical point of view, and you know, patients obviously telling their stories as well”, said Hudson.

Fine fettle in Macon is one of 3 licensed medical cannabis operators in the state. They grow, manufacture, and distribute products to dispensaries.

State Representative Anissa Jones was a part of the tour.

She says it was really insightful as a lawmaker to learn the process and how it can help Georgians.

“Knowledge is power because we now get a firsthand look at what the process is and how controlled it is. It’s just not folks out there just growing stuff wild in nature and now we’re able to get the same product over and over to be able to help patients”, said Jones.

The most recent cannabis-related bills were Senate Bill 220 and House Bill 227, both of which were stalled in the chambers.

They would have expanded the medical cannabis program, like making it easier for Georgians to access a medical cannabis card, and updated the product form to give the most effective medical cannabis.

Dr. Elmore Alexander shared some of his concerns about the delays in expanding medical marijuana in Georgia.

“We can treat properly 80% of the people with what we have, but that other 20% who are a critical population that we need to be able to reach. We need additional products. We need more choices and we need the state to open of the cannabis program and get these products available to the patients”, said Alexander.
