AUSTIN, Texas – Hemp advocacy groups are battling a bill that would ban THC products in Texas. The Hemp Business Council held a press conference on Monday, June 2 to address statements from Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who has made a clear anti-hemp stance as the bill as passed through the House and the Senate.
Senate Bill 3 now sits on Governor Greg Abbott’s desk, awaiting a final decision. He can choose to sign the bill into law or veto it. The bill will become law if he doesn’t decide either option.
The HBC claims the bill will kill a multi-billion-dollar industry in Texas, removing the jobs of over 53,000 workers from farmers to small business owners.
They also say thousands of veterans throughout the state will be affected, as they turned to hemp and THC-based products as opposed to prescription drugs like opioids and anti-depressants.
The advocacy group says they’ve gathered over 100,000 signatures on a petition opposing the bill, and they plan on delivering thousands of letters to Governor Abbott’s desk.
If SB 3 becomes law, the new policy will go into effect on Sept. 1.
