SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Gov. JB Pritzker was furious the Illinois House failed to vote on a plan to crack down on the sale of intoxicating hemp products last year. However, lawmakers still haven’t addressed the problem.

Democrats and Republicans know there is a growing number of stores with unregulated THC products putting consumers at risk.

Rep. Steve Reick (R-Woodstock) told his colleagues Thursday that hemp farmers in his district have asked why Illinois hasn’t put regulations in place. Last year’s proposal would have imposed the same taxing and testing requirements the state has in place for recreational marijuana.

“Regulate them in a way that gets products that are being sold in unregulated spots like gas stations and things like that off the street,” Reick said. “These hemp businesses are more than happy to work with regulators to show that what their products are doing is not poisoning people.”

The Pritzker administration said the governor still supports passing legislation to protect public health and close loopholes to stop misleading marketing around intoxicating hemp.

“Too many children have been hospitalized because of unregulated intoxicating products and predatory sales tactics,” said Press Secretary Alex Gough. “It is incumbent upon all elected officials to uphold their responsibility to protect our children and support this bipartisan, commonsense, and decisive action.”

Lawmakers still have time to pass legislation out of both chambers. The General Assembly is scheduled to adjourn May 31.
