Groves — An investigation that began with a car parked illegally in Groves turned into a drug bust with an officer uncovering methamphetamine and marijuana.
Matthew Castillo, 37, is charged with 2nd degree felony drug possession. He was jailed on $40,000 bond.
KFDM/Fox 4 News obtained a probable cause affidavit for his arrest from Magistrate Marc DeRouen.
A Groves deputy marshal says at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, he saw a blue Subaru Outback parked illegally in the 4000 block Cleveland Avenue.
He walked around to the front passenger side window and immediately smelled marijuana inside the car. The deputy marshal also saw several small baggies in the front passenger’s seat. He ordered Castillo to get out of the car for a probable cause search, which Castillo refused.
Another officer who was called to the scene opened the driver’s side door and saw Castillo holding a small, black box. The officer asked Castillo to step out and placed him in handcuffs.
Both officers then opened the box and saw a small baggie containing a white, crystal-like substance they determined was methamphetamine. The black box also contained more baggies, a loaded syringe with a clear, liquid substance, and a small container with marijuana.
The deputy marshal placed Castillo in the rear of his patrol unit. During a probable cause search of the Subaru, officers found another baggie containing more crystal-like substance, a long cylindrical pipe with a burnt bulb at the end, commonly used to smoke meth, a miniature scale, and other drug items.
The deputy marshal performed two tests on both substances and said they turned blue, indicated the presence of methamphetamine.
