Tulsa Police arrested a manager at a Sonic, accused of giving a marijuana edible to a 16-year-old employee while the two were at work.
The teenager got sick and had to go to the hospital.
What Happened:
Tulsa Police say a woman called 911 Sunday night, saying her 16-year-old daughter was possibly overdosing at Sonic near 51st and Union. Police say when they got to the scene, the girl appeared to be unconscious and had been throwing up.
“She was what you would probably kind of say as unresponsive. She was throwing up and being sick from all of the stuff she ingested,” said Officer Danny Bean with Tulsa Police.
Police say the girl’s mom told officers the manager at Sonic, Darlene Durham, had given her daughter a marijuana edible. Police say Durham admitted she did it, but said only because the girl asked for it.
“I was just taken aback a little bit. Why did you give it to her? How did she end up with it? You know, because she asked for it. That’s just zero responsibility for anything,” said Bean.
Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor:
Durham was arrested for a misdemeanor, contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Police say it doesn’t matter whether the girl asked for edible or not; it is still against the law to give drugs or alcohol to minors.
“Not only a 16-year-old, but at a restaurant, where they are going to be involved with people all day long, getting food. Something bad is going to happen, even if you give that to a 16-year-old, no matter where, something bad is going to happen, especially in a huge public place,” said Bean. “You don’t know what could be in it or where they got it.”
Durham has since bonded out of jail.
News On 6 reached out to Sonic for a statement, but has yet to hear back.
