The 20-year-old Grand Island man who died in a crash early Tuesday in northwestern Lancaster County was “most likely” under the influence of synthetic marijuana at the time, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said Wednesday a preliminary investigation indicated Zacharie Cloutier was “most likely” under the influence of the drug. Several vape pens were found inside Cloutier’s car. Deputies are awaiting toxicology results.

Cloutier also wasn’t wearing a seat belt, Houchin said. He died at the scene.

The crash occurred at about 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of Nebraska 79 and West Bluff Road.

Cloutier was driving a Ford Escort south on Nebraska 79, went into the northbound lane and stuck a semi-truck head on, Houchin said.

The driver of the semi-truck, 25-year-old Zackary Heiden, of Lincoln, was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt.
