Callum Leonard Lockyer, 27, stole the drugs whilst working at DX Network Services on October 10, 2022.

The court heard that Lockyer had been working the night shift with a small group.

His manager, who had popped outside for a smoke break, saw Lockyer leaving carrying a package over his shoulder and his personal items. He ran when challenged.

Upon returning to find out what was missing, it was discovered that one of seven parcels of medical 22 per cent THC cannabis bound for Guernsey, weighing 3.25 kilogrammes, had been stolen.

There was CCTV of the theft, which Judge Peter Henry said appeared to be “impulsive”, rather than planned.

Police later arrested Lockyer on Calmore Road in Totton on October 14, 2022. He had £284 and a phone.

Using the phone, he had been advertising that he had six kilogrammes of marijuana, more than he stole, and had people making requests.

At the time, he was living in a tent in a garden of a property in Rufus Gardens, Totton. Though police found nothing relevant in his tent, they did find pots from the stolen product within the property.

The drugs were never recovered, and Lockyer refused to comment in the police interview.

Keely Harvey, prosecuting, said: “He was looking to run away because he knew police were looking for him and where he could buy scales to measure the weed.”

Ms Harvey added that Lockyer, whose address was given as Haydock Close, Totton, appeared to have made little to no money from selling the drugs, adding he “wasn’t living the high life.”

Steven Tricker, mitigation, said that a head injury at the age of 12 had resulted in acute brain damage, which may have contributed to his behaviour. However, Judge Henry dismissed this explanation as a court-ordered psychological evaluation disagreed with this conclusion.

Lockyer pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and has no other relevant offences.

In passing his sentence, Judge Henry said: “Some time between you stealing these drugs and you being stopped by police, it has disappeared.

“Either you have used a considerable amount yourself, but your phone shows you have made people aware you had it, and there were messages from others asking to buy it.”

Judge Henry sentenced Lockyer, who is a self-employed carpenter and father living with his ex’s dad, to two concurrent eight-month sentences suspended for two years.

He must also complete 30 rehabilitation days and 150 hours of unpaid work. The phone and money are to be seized.
