Beckley, WV (WOAY) – A new UC San Francisco research-led study finds that chronic cannabis use comes with significant cardiovascular risk.
That’s whether it is smoked or consumed as edibles.
It has potential to ease your mind. But cannabis use could put a strain on your heart. Two major studies suggest that active marijuana users face a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.
Those studies found that daily marijuana use increases the risk of heart attack 25 percent and 42 percent for stroke.
“Pulled data from 75 million people across the country and also include one from India. So they found that it’s kind of inconsistent,” said Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Chayakrit Krittanawong. “But most of them suggested that the risk of heart attack is at least 150 percent.”
People were divided into two groups, those who never smoked or vaped and used marijuana alone. The other group used marijuana, smoked and vaped. The risk of heart attack increased for both groups.
“Become like what we call emerging cardiovascular risk factor. So in the future, I believe that marijuana use will be implemented in the way with cigarette smoking.”
Another potential way to protect your heart.
“We have a lot of active ongoing study that in the future we probably get more idea and why,” Krittanawong said.
We don’t have consisent data yet, nor do we know the mechanism behind cannibus use and cardiac health.
“I would recommend to do the same thing like alcohol,” said the Interventional Cardiologist. “So basically in moderation, maybe like one time a week is probably okay. But everyday it’s clear from the study that it’s not okay, and has a high risk of heart attack and stroke.”
