PADUCAH — After the legalization of medical cannabis in Kentucky, which took effect January 2025, local government entities within the commonwealth have started passing policies to regulate the use of the substance.
The McCracken County Fiscal Court had the first reading of an ordinance Monday that would prohibit county employees from utilizing medical cannabis.
McCracken County Judge Executive Craig Clymer explained the county’s position on employees using medical cannabis and how it could affect their work performance.
“The science is that medical marijuana can affect people’s ability to perform their jobs. It could be a safety issue, depending on what the job is. You wouldn’t want a truck driver or backhoe operator or somebody to be using medical marijuana,” he said. “We have to be conscious of the safety factor.”
Clymer explained after in-depth discussion with county leaders, they decided it would be in the county’s best interest for people to seek alternative pain management medications for medical issues in order to protect citizens and workers.
“Obviously if somebody needs medical marijuana, there’s other alternatives that meets the pain reliever that’s present in medical marijuana,” he said.
