Some of our elected state officials are ready to legalize so-called “recreational” marijuana, seemingly without having a thorough understanding of the risks of unnecessary harms or doing a cost-benefit study.

First, let’s put the term “recreational drugs” in the circular file permanently.

The appropriate use of any drug is for legitimate and necessary medical purposes, when drug-free methods are ineffective for prevention, treatment or cure of a medical condition.

Unnecessary drug use is drug abuse, and a society that legalizes drug abuse is a sick society.

Drug approval is the role of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Its mission is to determine, through a well-established approval process, whether a prescription or over-the-counter drug is safe. Approved drugs are labeled with information about usage, dosage and any possible negative effects. Prescription drugs are usually accompanied by separate paperwork with additional information.

We are already, in my view, seeing plenty of problems with the state Legislature’s approval of cannabis for medical purposes.

Instead of making it easier for citizens, young and old, to essentially use drugs as an anesthesia in order to live life to its fullest, we should teach coping skills so they can deal with the challenges in life.

Legislators should do their duty and make the best decisions for the common good of the citizens’ health, safety and well-being. Be wise and tear up this bill.
