Love eating Haribo gummy candies?
Then it’s worth knowing that the company has pulled bags of the enjoyable treat due to a potential cannabis contamination.
According to The New York Post and People, Haribo has pulled its “Happy Cola FIZZ” gummies after multiple members of a Dutch family reported experiencing a “dizziness” after eating the soda-bottle shaped snacks.
In a statement, NVWA spokesperson Saida Ahyad told local outlet Deutsche Welle, “The police reported this to the NVWA after several people, both children and adults, became ill after eating the cola bottles.”
As a result of learning that the candy had been potentially tainted with cannabis, the company issued a nationwide recall that spanned across the European country, per The New York Post.
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) issued a warning on May 29 that alerted consumers in the country to avoid buying the 1,000-gram pack of candies.
The agency also told Dutch broadcaster Hart van Nederlandthat “samples were taken, and cannabis was found in them.” Therefore, “do not eat the sweets.” After, The NVWA added to the outlet that they “immediately contacted Haribo,” and the company “issued a safety warning.”
Regarding what the tainted candy packages looks like, the soda bottle-shaped gummies come in a clear, sealed package with a blue banner on the top and bottom. Haribo’s signature bears can be seen on the product packaging.
In a post on its website, the NVWA wrote, “There are bags in circulation with sweets that can lead to health complaints, such as dizziness, when consumed.”
Haribo confirmed that its working alongside authorities to investigate the contamination, saying that it appears only a single batch in the Netherlands was tainted, and none in any other country, per The New York Post.
Out of precaution, Haribo came to the decision to remove all bags with a best-before date of January 2026 in the Netherlands as the company plans to issue full refunds to those who bought bags that were affected by the recall.
“The safety of our consumers is our highest priority and Haribo takes this incident very seriously, which is why a recall has been issued in the Netherlands,” Haribo said in a statement, per The Post and People.
