LAS ANIMAS/HUERFANO — Retail marijuana sales within Las Animas County dropped nearly 35% year-over-year, according to the latest sales data from the Colorado Department of Revenue.
Retail marijuana sales dropped 34.4% between February 2024 and February, representing a loss of $483,500 of legal marijuana sales, according to an analysis of the latest available CDOR marijuana sales data.
Las Animas County marijuana shops saw a total of $920,300 sold in February 2025, according to the latest available CDOR sales data, compared to the $1,403,900 sold last February.
Las Animas County is not the only county within the bi-county region to see a year-over-year drop in legal retail marijuana sales.
Huerfano County, which historically sees lower marijuana sales than Las Animas County, experienced a 9% decrease between February 2024 and February 2025, calculating a loss of $15,000 in retail sales.
The plop continued with month-over-month sales.
Las Animas and Huerfano counties both also experienced declines between January and February this year.
Las Animas retail marijuana sales nicked down 1.8%, or a loss of $17,000.
The county saw $937,900 of retail marijuana sold in January compared to the $920,300 sold in February.
Huerfano County slipped 6.5% between January and February, seeing a decline of $10,500 of legal retail marijuana sales, according to an analysis of CDOR data by the World Journal.
Huerfano County marijuana shops saw $161,200 of retail sales in January, compared to $150,700 in February, according to CDOR marijuana data.
Medical sales for Las Animas and Huerfano counties were not reportable and not applicable, respectively. CDOR labels certain marijuana data “not reportable” due to confidentiality requirements.
Las Animas County holds 16 registered marijuana shops, while Huerfano holds three, according to the latest available CDOR data.
Colorado sales wafted the way of county sales, seeing total sales drop 11.4% year-over-year between February 2024 and February – burning $13 million in sales.
Total sales statewide topped $101,329,024 in February.
Statewide total marijuana sales decreased 6.6%, or by $7.2 million.
Retail sales statewide topped $90,814,063 in February, CDOR sales data shows.
Colorado marijuana shops experienced a statewide decline of 9.7%, or $9.7 million year-over-year, ending in February, while dropping 6%, or $5.8 million between January and February.
Medical sales saw the greatest decrease in February.
Between February 2024 and February medical-use sales decreased nearly 24%, or $3.3 million.
Medical-use sales statewide slowed between January and February, slipping 11.8% for a loss of $1.4 million.
Between January and April, the latest marijuana sales tax available from CDOR, Colorado accumulated $79.1 million of sales taxes. Between February 2014 and April 2025, Colorado has amassed $2.9 billion of marijuana sales taxes.
