CHICKASHA – A traffic stop near here last week led to the arrest of a suspect transporting illegal marijuana, and then to the seizure of several hundred pounds of marijuana and the detention of eight Chinese nationals who were in the U.S. illegally.
Grady County Deputy Matt Wallace reported stopping the vehicle north of town May 13 on County Road 1320 off U.S. 81 near Chickasha Municipal Airport and Fairlawn Cemetery.
A warrant to search a marijuana farm was obtained and executed the morning of May 14 by Grady County deputies and agents from the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority. The raid resulted in the seizure of more than 900 pounds of finished marijuana product and buds, Sheriff Gary Boggess said.
While the search warrant was being served, multiple Chinese nationals working at the marijuana farm were detained and U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement was contacted, Boggess related.
ICE agents “determined that eight of the Chinese nationals were in the United States illegally,” the sheriff said. The agents “took the eight individuals into custody,” and some of them “had been previously deported.”
The OMMA “will be filing sanctions on the marijuana grow facility for illegal activities,” Boggess said. “During this process, the grow facility’s license can be revoked permanently,” he added.
“We have several more operations we’re looking at,” Boggess told Southwest Ledger on Saturday. “I don’t want these illegal places operating in Grady County, and we don’t want them [illegal immigrants] living here.”
