Two men are being questioned by gardaí following the seizure of 500kg of cannabis valued at up to €10 million in Co Clare.

The drugs were recovered at a residential property in the Meelick area, a short distance from the Co Limerick border.

The seizure was part of a planned joint operation led by Revenue and Customs officials and gardaí attached to the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, supported by staff from the Limerick Garda Divisional Drugs Unit and gardaí in Co Clare.

Two men in their 60s were arrested and are being detained at Garda stations in Clare and Limerick. .

One of the two men is understood to work in the airline industry.

Revenue said that “approximately 500 kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €10,000,000” was recovered “as part of an intelligence-led operation”.

It said the seizure was part of ongoing joint investigations into organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs.

Gardaí said the drugs were discovered on two large pallets and the haul would be analysed at the Forensic Science Laboratory at Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park, Dublin.

Gardaí said the two men arrested were being questioned under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act, 1996.

“This seizure forms part of Operation Tara; an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, which was launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris on 2nd July 2021,” a Garda statement read.

“The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels – international, national, local – involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs.”

The statement said investigations are ongoing.
