The Vicksburg Police Department made a big drug bust over the weekend.
On Sunday night, during a traffic stop at the entrance to Interstate 20, police, with the assistance of a drug-sniffing dog, found 70 pounds of marijuana inside vacuum-sealed bags, presumably stuffed inside a white suitcase. Police said the marijuana has a street value of $100,000.
Two handguns were also seized.
The driver, Tayvion Pope, 22, from Vicksburg, and Robert Ward, 24, from Port Gibson, were both arrested.
Police said Pope was out on bond for a previous charge.
A Vicksburg Municipal Court judge gave Pope a $300,000 bond and Ward a $200,000 bond.
Chief Penny Jones said in a Facebook post, “I commend the officers and K9 unit for their attention to detail and commitment to keeping illegal drugs off our streets.”
