ST PAUL, MINN. (Valley News Live) – The White Earth Band of Chippewa will become the first tribal nation in Minnesota to open recreational marijuana dispensaries outside of its reservation, under a deal signed by Gov. Tim Walz on Tuesday.

The agreement allows White Earth to open up to eight retail cannabis dispensaries across the state. As Valley News Live reported in February the trial nation planned to open at the old JL Beers location in Moorhead in March, but that was dependent on the compact agreement being approved. Their website now says at the top “New Location Coming Soon! 2902 US-10 Moorhead, MN, 56560″.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that it could open as soon as this weekend.

Sales on on reservation started back in 2023, at 850 E Adams Ave. in Mahnomen. Red Lake Nation’s NativeCare dispensary was the first in the state to legally sell recreational marijuana on August 1st of that year.

However, most private businesses across Minnesota are not able to sell recreational marijuana at this time because the state office designed to oversee the sale and management isn’t fully operational.
