WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Saturday, April 20, or “4/20,” is an unofficial holiday with many taking part in marijuana-centric celebrations. CBD stores around Wichita are gearing up for more customers while law enforcement agencies prepare to crack down on impaired drivers throughout Kansas.

In Wichita, CBD Plus USA General Manager Lucas Fitch said April 20 is one of his store’s biggest days of the year. It’s a day he said he expects to be “quite hectic to say the least.”

“That and Black Friday, I mean, ‘yeah, it is our absolute busiest days of he year,” Fitch said. “ So yeah, (on) 4/20, we have all hands on deck. We make sure all of our employees and coworkers are in the store.”

Each year, he said, the celebration on April 20 grows.

“Yeah, and people are realizing it more and more every day,” Fitch said. “Our customer base, as time progresses more and more, people are jumping aboard this train and getting behind hemp, CBD, cannabis, you name it.”

Also in Wichita, KannaBliss owner Brett Harris said while many think getting medical and recreational marijuana legalization won’t happen in Kansas, 4/20 is a good opportunity to educate people about the legalization efforts.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to really update Kansans on legalization, where we are,” Harris said.

He said there’s a bill “still on the move” with the 2024 Kansas legislative session winding down.

“So it’s a really great day to educate and communicate the great thing about this cannabinoid,” he said.

Through Monday, law enforcement agencies across Kansas will have increased enforcement on the lookout for impaired drivers. Harris emphasized the importance of planning for those traveling to celebrate 4/20.

“We’ve got two recreational states and a medical state right now around us and there’s going to be a lot of people traveling there. So I guess the big tip on 4/20 is, think about how you’re going to get home if you are overserved,” Harris said.
