Manchester City Women have received a huge boost as winger Lauren Hemp commits herself to another three years at the Joie Stadium. Hemp has been a key member of the City side that currently sit at the top of the WSL and are going toe-to-toe with Chelsea for the title.

The 23-year-old has scored 65 goals in 157 appearances for City and is also an integral part of Sarina Wiegman’s England side, with 55 caps so far for the national side.

It was rumoured earlier this year, Hemp was a possible target for Barcelona, given that City’s attempts to tie the star down to a new deal were proving elusive. However, news that Hemp has now signed on until 2027 will greatly boost City and manager Gareth Taylor.

“This is a special team. I want to take my game to the next level, and I feel like I’m capable of doing that here,” said Hemp after signing her new deal. “The WSL is the best league to be in. I feel at home here in Manchester. With the squad we have here, we are always learning and it’s so special to be involved at a Club where we’re capable of achieving anything.

“I’m so passionate about this Club and there’s no place I’d rather be. I’m very excited to keep this journey going for the next few years.”

And boss Taylor couldn’t hide his delight at securing the services of one of England’s best wingers for another three years. “Absolutely amazing, really crucial for us to proceed and make those steps forward that we want to,” said Taylor. “She’s still a young player, has so much to do but really enjoyed the journey so far. She’s someone who’s really coachable. I’m excited by what the future can bring for her and the team.

“The growth she has shown has been incredible, and we know that she will continue to bring great things to the team for the next three years.

“There’s so much more to come and we’re really pleased that Lauren has extended her stay with the Club.”

Hemp has won numerous awards and accolades during her time at the Joie Stadium as well as being part of the England squad that finally brought football home, though sadly, not ending that annoying song. The winger has been named PFA Young Player of the Year four times, in addition to being named in the WSL Team of the Year twice. Hemp has also won four major honours with City and was honoured with an MBE in the 2024 New Year’s Honours list. Not bad for a girl from Norfolk!

Of course, the City faithful will be delighted at the news of Lauren’s new deal and we hope she can put the cherry on the cake with a WSL title in May.
