BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Medical marijuana has become more and more popular over the years.

North Dakota is one of 38 states to allow cannabis for medical purposes under strict guidelines.

Doctors like Dr. Benjamin Caplan say medical professionals and patients might be sleeping on some of the benefits they might receive from using cannabis. He said it’s been used for a long time and in different cultures but has fallen out of favor during the past 100 years.

“A lot of people have hated cannabis and want to prove that it’s this evil thing, and actually, the National Institute for Drug Abuse— the national organization— funded research that showed cannabis’ harms. So we’re coming from behind now in this culture, and a lot of cannabis knowledge out there is misinformed or under-informed,” said Dr. Caplan.

If you want similar benefits but don’t want to use cannabis, Dr. Caplan said exercising and getting the right amount of sleep is a great pharmaceutical-free option.
